When you are looking for a unique, over-the-top custom cake, look no further than Jodie Lavoie of Sugar Rush Cakery! I’ve been a secret admirer of Jodie’s work for quite some time and was so excited to connect with her and share this special piece to highlight her talent! Jodie has recently relocated to Calhan, Colorado, to support her family’s ranch, but still serves Castle Rock and many other communities throughout Colorado. Read on to learn what inspired her to start making cakes, why she almost didn’t launch her business in Colorado and how she felt about her Food Network Cake Wars experience!
Before The Sugar Rush
About 11 years ago, Jodie and her husband were living in Florida and pregnant with their first son. She stumbled upon an episode of Cake Boss and shared that she, “had never seen cakes made like that in my entire life and I thought it was so cool!” The very next day, Jodie went out and bought all the supplies she thought she would need and started teaching herself to make custom cakes. Jodie is a former collegiate softball player and had, “an amazing desire to have a creative outlet.” She had worked in both the food and real estate industries for many years and always really enjoyed “challenging myself.” This newfound passion would prove to be a turning point in her life. Check out one of my many favorite cakes by Jodie!
The Sugar Rush Hits
Jodie originally launched the Sugar Rush Cakery in Florida, before moving to Colorado in 2017. Specializing in custom cakes, cake pops, decorated cookies and cupcakes, Jodie can do it all. She even made an appearance on Food Network’s Cake Wars in 2017! She shared that, “It was a whirlwind experience, and I was blessed to have the opportunity to compete against the best of the best in our industry.” Not bad for someone who had just started making cakes 6 years prior!
Their family’s move to Castle Rock, Colorado was very short-notice and was driven by her husband’s career. Given the sudden move and the overwhelming thought of starting a new business from scratch, Jodie picked her career back up in real estate. But then a series of events occurred over the next few years, forcing Jodie and her husband to rethink things.
Jodie had been rear-ended in a car accident leaving her in need of surgery to alleviate daily pain. Covid also hit, so Jodie opted to take a break from real estate and also homeschool the three children they now had. But Jodie didn’t like not being able to contribute to the family income, so she thought she’d try relaunching her bakery business. Much to her surprise, the Castle Rock community embraced Jodie and the Sugar Rush Cakery! 2020 ended up being a HUGE year for her custom baked goods as people tried to celebrate special occasions privately. Long story short, her bakery business snowballed from there!
These days, Jodie tries to cap orders at 10 a week, which is a lot for a mom of three busy kids! Jodie also still manages some real estate business on the side too! But just when you think she’s busy enough, she added more!
The Sugar Rush Continues
Earlier this year, Jodie and her family moved to Calhan, Colorado, to start a family ranch. Jodie shared, “We are always doing something to try to make ourselves better or set our kids up for something in the future.” She joked that after watching A LOT of Yellowstone, they took the plunge and are loving it.
I don’t know where Jodie finds all the hours in a day but somehow, she juggles them all perfectly. And did I mention that she still delivers cakes and other goodies back to Castle Rock and other surrounding communities to support her customer base? Between her baking skills and time management, she’s a superhero.
No doubt, Jodie’s talent and love for really unique cakes and other goodies will continue to help her business thrive. Jodie’s husband is also a Military Veteran, and she wants customers to know that she does offer a 10% discount for members of the military.
It has been such a privilege and joy to recognize Jodie’s artistry and I hope you enjoy the gallery of some of her work below. I HIGHLY encourage you to visit her website where you can see much more of her work. If you’re in Colorado, I recommend connecting with Jodie for your next event. If you’re not in Colorado, let Jodie’s talent serve as an inspiration to try something new and keep challenging yourself!
