Hey Bestie! Whether you’re just exploring the idea of using a projector for cookie decorating or already have one, I’m sharing tips, tricks and tried-and-true guidance to get the most out of using a projector. If you’re here, you already know that all of us cookiers are not naturally gifted artists. But a projector is a tool that the vast majority of cookiers rely on to create stunning designs. Those you bake for don’t need to know you use a projector to assist in creating amazing edible art. But it can do wonders to open up a whole world of design options and take your cookies to the next level. So today we’ll cover how to use a projector for cookie decorating. I’m answering your FAQs and sharing all my projector experience to set you up for success. Let’s go!
Welcome to using a cookie projector
In working with thousands of cookiers or all levels over the years, a projector is one tool that nearly all of them could never go without. Even for those who are artistically gifted, things like spacing, different fonts and symmetry can be extremely hard to eyeball. So a projector works as an assist in creating beautiful edible art. It’s another tool in our decorating arsenal, but it doesn’t do the decorating for you. Don’t ever let anyone think you’re ‘less than’ because you use a projector or that using one magically makes cookie decorating easy. That’s far from the truth, but they are welcome to give it a whirl to see for themselves! It still requires skill and technique, but there are tips and tricks that make that experience easier.
The projector I could never go without
I use THIS baby every day when decorating my cookies. It’s the most popular in the cookie decorating world too, so it’s in good company. The top reasons cookiers like myself love it is because it’s wireless, it projects a bright, crystal-clear image, and it lasts for years. Often times cookiers try starting with a cheap projector in the hopes of saving money, only to be met with frustration, wasted time, money and energy. And while I know a good projector isn’t cheap, it’s worth just getting what will meet your needs for years to come. You’ll be hard-pressed to find a cookier who wishes they got something other than this one.
Cookie Projector Stand options
A stand is so not an exciting thing to buy but is absolutely necessary when using a projector for cookie decorating. But in Bestie-land, I always like to give you options!
Many people are shocked that I use THIS cheap stand with my projector every day, but it’s true! For decorating cookies, it does everything I need it to, so I’m happy to recommend it. And in the video demo I’m sharing later in this post, you can see it in action.
And then, of course, is THIS baby, which I personally use nearly all the time for filming, but is VERY popular in our cookie community for use with projectors. It’s very sturdy, can be positioned endless amounts of ways and holds a projector like a champ.
This is considered the ‘gold standard’ when it comes to projector stands, so you won’t regret pairing this with your projector years of success.
So which one is right for you? I know…there’s a big price difference and I watch out for your bank account like I do mine. So here’s my honest advice. If you’re looking for a stand that will just be used for your projector for cookie decorating, I’d go with THIS one. However, if you plan to use your projector for cakes, filming or other things, then I’d definitely go with THIS one. It really just depends on how you plan to use it and your goals. One works beautifully for cookie decorating projecting, and one offers versatility for many other uses as well.
how to use a projector for cookie decorating – video tutorial
Alright, enough words, I want you to see these in action as well as other tips for using a projector for decorating. I recently shared this 3-part series on my socials and so many people always say, “Where will I be able to find these videos again?” So I’ve strung them together for you in this one video that you can always reference.
I cover how to start projecting, sizing images, stand options, different ways to set up and more. Thousands of cookiers found this series helpful so I hope you do too.

Where to find images or fonts to project?
Aside from HOW to use a projector for decorating, many wonder where to get images or fonts to project on their cookies. Honestly, most cookiers are using Google or other search engines to find clip art, backgrounds or even AI to find images for their cookies. The simplest method is to take a screenshot of whatever you’d like to project. I also commonly use my royal icing transfer sheet designs to project design elements onto my cookies.
For fonts, Dafont.com and Canva are my two go-to resources. If you’re going to use Dafont, use the actual website, not the app. Simply enter whatever wording you want and see how it looks across thousands of fonts. Screenshot what you like and project!
I do love the ease of using Canva to put together words in a layout for the cookie. You can easily use the free version of Canva and their fonts to create the full layout of your design. Or, you can take screenshots of Dafont words, upload those to Canva and arrange your layout there as well. Options is the name of the game here, Besties! There is an endless number of images, words and content you can project to create awesome designs!
