Hey Besties! You know I’m always excited to share new recipes with you, but THIS one is next level! My family counts on me for my M&M cookies several times a year. And it finally dawned on me…why have I not created an incredible M&M cutout cookie recipe?! To the kitchen I went, and MANY trials, tweaks and taste testings later, here we are! I will warn you and I’m SERIOUS about this: If you sample the dough, there’s a good chance you’ll eat the whole bowl. No joke, it’s insanely good. But that is the easiest part of making these because as always, they require no chilling and are quick and simple to make! Let’s do this!
Cutout Cookie Recipe Collection
In case you’re new here, you should know that I specialize in cutout cookie recipes that require no chilling, perfectly keep their shapes and are insanely delicious. As a busy mom, I do not have time to let dough chill because anytime I’ve tried, it’s 3 days later before I remember it’s in the fridge and now have to start over. Year ago, I went on a quest to create cutout cookie recipes that I could make and have cookies out of the oven in less than an hour. And I’m happy to report that we have over 20 delicious flavors now! And a full batch is usually cooling and ready to enjoy or decorate in under 40 minutes. That’s what I’m talking about. So if you’ve dreaded making cutout cookies and are ready for insanely delicious, easy and quick cookie shapes, you’ve come to the right place.
You can find my cutout cookie recipe collection HERE, which only continues to grow. I’m also a firm believer that a cookie needs to taste as good as it looks. It’s not good enough to have a pretty cookie. It needs to stand on its OWN, so get ready to enjoy some of the best cutout cookies you’ve ever tasted!
Perfect cutout Cookie Shapes
When bakers think about cutout cookies, they are always looking for a recipe that perfectly hold all their fun shapes. I’ve got great news; you can achieve all your favorite shapes without chilling! It’s a combination of the right recipe, making the dough correctly and making on the right surface. Even better news? It’s incredibly simple and once you learn this, you’ll enjoy perfect shapes forever. If you’ve ever struggled with cutout cookie spread before, THIS post will fix it for you!
And if you’re curious to see how different baking surfaces affect the outcome of cutout cookies, our cookie research HERE will answer those questions!
To Ice or Enjoy Plain? That Is the question!
I’m going to level with you, Bestie. If I want to decorate these M&M cutout cookies, I have to hide them out of sight. I can’t tell you how many times full batches have gotten gobbled up before icing was even made. These cookies absolutely stand on their own. However, we also LOVE to decorate beautiful cookies around here! So if you’re looking for an amazing royal icing recipe, THIS will explain exactly how we make our icing for all of our cookies. It’s super simply to make with just a few important steps!
And because I know you’ll ask, “What flavor icing do you use with these?” The answer is our regular vanilla icing! We almost always use our delicious vanilla icing with all of our cutout cookies because it lets the cookie flavor shine! It compliments it without overpowering or taking away from the cookie. Plus, vanilla is an essential ingredient in M&M cookies, so it’s the perfect match with these!

The Irresistible M&M Cutout Cookie Recipe
Ingredients
- 1 cup (227g) Unsalted Butter Chilled & Cubed
- 1 cup (170g) Light Brown Sugar Packed
- 1/2 cup (100g) Granulated White Sugar
- 1 Tbsp (13g) Vanilla Extract
- 1 Large Egg Chilled
- 3 cups (390g) All-Purpose Flour
- 1 tsp (6g) Salt
- 1 tsp (5g) Baking Powder
- 3/4 cup Mini M&Ms
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 350 degrees F.
- We bake on our favorite perforated baking mats to eliminate any chance of spread, for even baking and pretty undersides of our cookies!
- Cream butter and sugars until smooth, about 2 minutes. No need to excessively cream as it can lead to cookie spread.
- Beat in vanilla and egg.
- In a separate bowl, combine baking powder, salt, and flour. Add to wet ingredient mixing bowl a little at a time.
- Mix until thoroughly blended. Dough should be pulling away from the bowl.
- Fold in mini M&Ms and mix by hand.
- Chilling the dough is not necessary! I have tried many different ways of rolling out dough and always come back to the old-fashioned way; a sheet of wax paper that has been floured.
- I usually divide the dough into 3 chunks and roll out each onto a floured surface and cut. In my experience, this dough works best for cookies at 1/4" thick. I use my Joseph Joseph rolling pin which does the measuring for me – genius! If you prefer thicker cookies, you'll just want to adjust your baking time.
- Bake at 350 for 7-8 minutes, depending on size of cookie. I also suggest baking similar-sized cookies together.
- Cool cookies on cookie sheet until firm enough to transfer to cooling rack.

I want to know how you get the M so puffy.
Hi! I use a puffy icing consistency which is thicker! You can see exactly what that consistency looks like in this guide! Look for the section specifically for puffy icing. I hope this helps! https://www.yourbakingbestie.com/sugar-cookie-icing-consistencies/
