Hey Besties! I had so much fun creating these colorful cookies and I hope they spark some inspiration for you too! When it comes to birthday cookies, sometimes people have a specific theme they want, but other times, people just want some cute birthday cookies! These birthday cookie design ideas work for everyone, of all ages, in all colors! These are versatile designs that work great for birthdays but also many other occasions as well. Read on for my favorite recipe, see the designs and find out where you can snag these cutters to round out your collection!

The Recipe I’m Obsessed With

Full transparency: We have a whole collection of amazingly delicious cutout cookie flavor recipes that you always have access to HERE. I love them all but am currently obsessed with THIS recipe I recently published. The flavor is just on point and the sprinkles bring the fun! It felt like the natural fit for these birthday cookie design ideas! But rest assured, you’ve got lots of options, so pick your favorite flavor or stick with our tried-and-true vanilla recipe, HERE.

And of course, let’s talk about royal icing for a moment! If you have a recipe that gives you the flavor and results you LOVE, stick with it! But if you’re looking for a recipe or are struggling with any royal icing issues, I highly encourage you to read THIS post. I walk through exactly how we make our icing, which is very simple, that gives us perfect results every time. While the list of ingredients to make royal icing is short, HOW you make it and the products you use make a world of difference! Also know that we only use Genie’s Dream meringue powder, which contributes to our perfect icing!

All of today’s colors come from ChefMaster too! We buy THIS set on repeat and can make all the shades, hues and colors from this set!

Birthday Cookie Cutters

If you’ve been here before, you know I only recommend investing in cutters that you’ll use over and over again. Or if you LOVE to have all the cutters, then invest in a 3D printer to save yourself a fortune! But for these birthday cookie design ideas, I love the versatility of these cutters. They can really be used for any occasion or celebration and complement other themes perfectly!

  • Cake Slice Cutter: Super cute and versatile for different celebrations!
  • Cake Stand Cutter: I had to have this when I saw it. I have a thing for pretty cake stands!
  • 3-piece Present Cutters: These are new to my collection this year and I can’t wait to use this during the holidays!
  • Star Balloon Cutter: While I love a cute set of balloons, these star balloons are different and fun!

Most of these designs come from HollyFoxDesign, which is a favorite shop of ours! Super cute designs and free shipping when you spend $35. YES!

The best part of these designs is that you can decorate them many different ways depending on your style, colors, theme and more. I hope these birthday cookie design ideas inspired you to create some colorful cookie art of your own!

On the balloon birthday cookie, how do you make the balloons ?

Hi Carolyn! Thanks for the sweet message! I adore that balloon cookie! You just want to use slightly thicker icing that will hold the shape and add the dots in varying sizes, letting them crust before adding another dot that touches it. This way, they don’t bleed together, and you keep the nice bubble shapes. It’s kind of time consuming or takes several rounds of just adding more of each color, but it’s quick to do each time. Add some blue bubbles, let them crust. Add some yellow bubbles, let them crust. And repeat! I do use a dehydrator so that speeds up the crusting process, so every couple minutes, I add some more bubbles! If you wnated, you could create larger bubbles that take up more surface area. That would be cute and perhaps quicker! Happy decorating, bestie!

Not sure if your baking soda is still good? Add a teaspoon of baking soda to 1/2 cup hot water. If it bubbles, it's still good!
