In the world of sports, there is always something to celebrate! Whether it’s a BIG game, an end of the season celebration or just great sportsmanship, there’s always a reason for jersey cookies! And like so many other cookie designs, they look harder than they are! Today we’ll break down the steps so you can master these too!
Royal Icing Number Transfers
When it comes to jersey numbers, some cookiers simply freehand them, some use a projector, but we (my daughter and I) prefer to use royal icing transfers. We have found this to be the easiest way to ensure the font turns out exactly how we like it. If you don’t have experience with royal icing transfers, I’ve got good news; they are super easy and fun to do! And yet another hack to add super cute designs to your cookies to up your game!
All you really need is a printout of the design you want to make and some sheet protectors. Yes, the ones you can buy at Target! If you use wax or parchment paper, the bottom of your transfer may not dry completely flat since the paper tends to curl when wet is applied to it. I have always had great success with sheet protectors, especially since it also keeps the paper perfectly in place.
Next, you’re going to use your regular royal icing, our favorite recipe is HERE, and make a medium-stiff consistency. Then simply pipe your design onto the sheet protector, following the design. You will want to let the sheets dry flat overnight to completely dry. And they will easily pop right off in the morning!

Decorating
I flooded my cookies the same day as I made my transfers and were ready to decorate on day 2. There are a couple different ways cookiers apply their transfers. It really comes down to personal preference and look you want. Had my transfers already been ready, I could have gently applied them to the cookies when the flood was fresh. In this case, I simply used a couple dots of royal icing on the back of my transfers to glue the numbers onto the dry flood. For jersey cookies, I prefer the look of this method as it gives a more 3D effect.
Next, I piped on some additional jersey details. You can see that I made a few additional designs for coaches and others supporting the team.
Once all dry, these babies were individually packaged and ready to go to the celebrating team!
You can see that as long as you can flood and do basic piping, royal icing transfers make these cookies look amazing! We’ve been able to make jersey cookies for all kinds of youth events in our area and they are always a huge hit! What kid wouldn’t want to receive their jersey in cookie form?!
