Recipes
Because these are all about spring, I opted to use our amazing lemon sugar cookie recipe! As always, it is no-chill, no-spread and oh so yummy! It seemed like a no-brainer for making a spring design and you can find the recipe HERE. I promise you will love the flavor!
If you’re looking for a fantastic royal icing recipe, THIS is our daily go-to! It’s easy to make, easy to work with, and we consistently achieve that smooth, perfect finish and flavor! I will say that I know our favorite meringue powder definitely contributes to how wonderful our icing is too!
Cutters & Guidance
If you’ve been here before, you know we love impactful, creative designs that are friendly for beginner and intermediate level decorators. This one is no exception, and you may already have the necessary cutters! For the melted snowman, you can use a circle cutter in the size of your choice. If you don’t already have a set of nesting circle cutters, I highly suggest THIS set. I use these with almost every set, and you’ll see I actually used a couple of the cutters to draw the design on the cookies too – super helpful!
For the sun, I used an old Wilton flower cutter I had from years ago. If you’d like something similar, THIS one is a good match.
If you’re new to cookie decorating, THIS guide will be very helpful for you as a place to start. It covers everything you need to know about essential tools you’ll need and icing consistencies.
Design
There are a few reasons with this cookie set is great for beginners. First, it provides great experience outlining and flooding circles, which can be challenging for new decorators. Second, it offers good practice with creating sections. With the snowmen, you’ll outline and flood a section, let it crust over, then add the next neighboring section. Lastly, these help you gain experience with outlining, flooding and a little bit of piping details. All of these are essential to mastering as you continue in your cookie decorating journey.
Decorating Video
I hope this decorating video is helpful in showing each step. A couple things to keep in mind! First, this is sped up…decorating in real time is much slower! And secondly, know that even though it appears the snowman rings are decorating one after the next, there is actually about 15 minutes between each step. Same with the sun…the flood has crusted over before adding the piped details and center.
