Having many ancestors and family that have served in the military, Memorial Day always has a special place in my heart. To all who have worn the uniform and those who have made the ultimate sacrifice, these Memorial Day cookies are dedicated to you. It is also the unofficial start of summer, which as a Minnesotan, is very exciting! We earn our warm weather and enjoy every minute of it. While we enjoy the barbeques and picnics, we honor those who fought for our freedom. Please thank a Veteran for their service next time you see them.

There are MANY fun options for Memorial Day cookies – flags, eagles, military tags, stars and so much more. Today, I kept it pretty beginner-friendly with some patriotic star and heart designs! Anytime I’m working with stripes, I recommend mapping out your design with an edible marker first. Otherwise, I always end up with wonky lines, but maybe that’s just me. I really love puffy icing too, so I worked in sections really maximizing my puff in each. THIS is my go-to royal icing recipe that always gives me great puff!
I used MasterChef gel colors:
- Super Red
- Royal Blue with a few drops of Navy
If you haven’t seen it already, I highly encourage you to read THIS post all about mastering the perfect colors.
I used the large and small star cutters from a 3-piece star set from Hobby Lobby. Those little stars are perfect little bite-sized cookies! And of course, I used my dehydrator to quick dry each color and to prevent bleed!
These were fun and easy to make and I hope they provide you some inspiration! I’m looking forward to making more and distributing to some local nursing homes on Memorial Day! What ways do you like to honor our Veterans? Leave a comment below!
