Hey Besties! If you’ve been here before, you’ll know I’m always looking for ways to create impactful designs that beginner and intermediate decorators can make! Which is why I’m so excited to finally be sharing my experience using Sugarveil to create delicate, lacey designs! I’ve been wanting to try this technique and product for quite some time and am sharing what I like and what I didn’t like when using it. Let’s get into it! Also note that this review is NOT sponsored and this only reflective of my personal experience.
Intro to Sugarveil
Sugarveil confectionary icing is used to create beautiful, delicate designs that can be applied to royal icing, buttercream, fondant and much more. While I used it on royal icing covered sugar cookies, it is commonly used on cakes and all kinds of baked goods. I’ve seen products with Sugarveil in the past and have always been impressed with how pretty they are but always wondered how difficult it was to use. I’m happy to tell you that it was not difficult at all, but I did learn some lessons that will hopefully help you!
Sugarveil confectionary icing is sold in vanilla and chocolate and for my first time, I used the chocolate since it was going on chocolate sugar cookies. It comes as a powder which you simply add water to and mix for a few minutes. Super easy, no issues there! Note that you can also color the vanilla icing if you’d like, using powder or gel colors.
Sugarveil also sells a wide variety of decorating mats in different designs and patterns. I opted to use THIS kit which included the icing and a flower mat. I really appreciated that they sell these kits with everything you need. They do of course also sell the icing mix and many more mat designs you can purchase separately.
How To Use Sugarveil
These are the things you’ll need:
- Sugarveil Confectionary Icing in vanilla or chocolate
- Decorative Mat – I bought a kit which included both the icing and mat, such as THIS
- Spreader – Sugarveil offers one HERE. Or I simply used my same spreader I use when stenciling, which are THESE.
- Iced cookies or cake! I used THIS chocolate sugar cookie recipe and THIS royal icing recipe
In terms of HOW to use Sugarveil confectionary icing, simply add water to the powdered mix and beat as directed.
Preheat your oven to 200 degrees F.
With your mat on top of a baking sheet, you will now use your spreader to scrape the icing across your mat, filling all the gaps.
Different mats require different baking times, so reference HERE for the amount of time to bake.
Once it comes out of the oven, you will wipe the mat with a damp towel, in a circular motion. Let cool for 10 min.
Everything up to this point has been a breeze! However, the most important tip is that you want to flip the mat over and peel the mat away from the lace. Do not try to peel the lace away from the mat as it is too delicate and will tear.
TIP! I did find my designs to be easier and sturdier when I did two coats of icing instead of just one. It made a world of difference and the mat easily peeled away from the lace this way. Once off of the mat, I found them to be sturdy and easy to work with. And beautiful!!
From here, I simply placed the lace designs on top of crusted royal icing and voila! If your icing was completely dry, I’d use a damp brush to moisten the bottom of the lace and apply.
See a couple designs here!

Most importantly, it tastes great, and there is no weird texture, it basically dissolves right away when you eat it.
Sugarveil Verdict
This was a super fun experiment and honestly, I’m excited to try the vanilla and other decorative mats! I’ve seen some stunning lacey designs for Valentine’s Day and all kinds of other ideas! Think of the wedding possibilities!
It’s a little finicky the first time, but once you do it once, it’s much easier. And like anything, you’ll get more and more efficient and could even make these ahead and store them, like transfers.
I LOVE the designs and the 3D look that they give! This is a really good option for beginners looking to make unique designs!
They are also very cost effective! Once pack of icing would make A LOT of designs. Now would I want to make 100 cookies with these? Probably not, unless I had a larger mat to make more at a time. But for smaller orders or accent cookies, this is a great option!
Overall, I’m a fan! Like I said, I’m excited to try more designs and found these very user-friendly! I hope you find my tips helpful if you decide to give Sugarveil a try!
