Hey Besties! With graduation season right around the corner, everyone is focused on the big kids! But don’t forget about the little ones celebrating big milestones too! Parents and teachers alike love celebrating the accomplishments of the littles in their lives! And I had so much fun making these simple, yet colorful and cute kindergarten graduation cookies! I’m breaking it all down for you with the recipes we use, the royal icing consistency and more! Let’s go!
Recipes
First things first, we need a delicious canvas, right? And while you have a whole collection of no-chill, delicious cutout cookie recipes to choose from HERE, there is one that kids always LOVE! Our Funfetti cutout cookie recipe! And maybe I’m a big kid then too because it’s definitely one of my top faves! Not only do colored sprinkles up the fun factor, but the cake batter flavoring is insanely good. Trust me on this one, many fellow cookiers have made this recipe their regular recipe that use for ALL their cookies, it’s that good! And if you’re new around here, you should know that all of our cutout cookie recipes are no-chill and no-spread. We simply don’t have time to chill dough and don’t need to! You can quickly make these cookies that perfectly hold all your fun shapes.
For decorating, we use royal icing which is not only stunning but delicious as well. It dries hard so you can package and stack cookies, but has a soft bite! And the key to making perfect royal icing is HOW the icing is made. THIS post will walk you through exactly how we make our royal icing every day. It’s very simple, but critical to follow the few steps. And if you’re a visual learner, HERE is a video showing you exactly how we make it!
Cookie Cutters & Design
Alright, Besties, we’ve got our cookie and icing recipe, let’s talk cookie cutters! If you’ve been here before, you’ll know I LOVE using basic shapes and plaques for super cute cookie sets. I honestly use cutters from THIS cutter set in every set I make. For the cute kindergarten diploma, I used THIS cutter. And the conversation or thought bubble cutter is one I’ve had for years! THIS one is similar or if you have a balloon cutter, sometimes you can make that work too!
For our icing colors, I used ChefMaster colors. We LOVE ChefMaster colors because they give us beautiful results and are super affordable. We order THIS set on repeat to make almost all of our colors. But I will also add that lately, I’m also loving the bright colors in THIS set. I used straight colors from each of these color sets to make the colors we’re using today. I mean, kindergarten graduation cookies had to be colorful and bright, right?
Cookie Decorating
Alright, we’ve baked our cookies in our fun shapes, made our icing, and now we’re ready to get decorating! This cookie set is very simple and we’ll go through each step. First, you’ll want to flood your cookies. I chose white but you could choose any color you like! If you’re new to flooding cookies, our Flooding 101 tutorial will be your new best friend. And because I love to give you options, you could also dip your cookies as well if you prefer! You can learn exactly how to do that HERE.
Once you have your base layer, you’ll want to use a writing consistency to create these designs. A writing consistency is thick enough to create these words and designs without the icing pooling or running together. My consistency guide will teach you all about different consistencies used in decorating, but you can see what a writing consistency looks like in this video!
For the actual designs, I simply searched online for the designs I liked, took screenshots and then used my projector to pipe the designs onto the cookies. If you want to learn more about the projector we use and love, you’ll find all of that information HERE. You can simply project your images and create these sweet designs!
For the font, I used a font called “One Little Font” from Canva which is a free font available to all. I think it’s super cute for kindergarten graduation cookies like these!
And the best part of this set is that it’s supposed to look like a kid wrote it! So, if your lines aren’t perfect, that’s okay! The design gives you full permission to not be perfect!
